The 8 essential Phuket shores

Rent a 125cc scooter in Old Town (~200–250 THB a day). You need a motorbike licence and a helmet — police check both. Then ride the hill over Kata to Nai Harn.

Freedom Beach

Hat Freedom • หาดฟรีดอม

Hidden behind steep granite cliffs and dense jungle, Freedom Beach remains one of Phuket's purest coastal sanctuaries. Because there is no paved road down to the sand, the water here boasts an electrifying turquoise hue with powdery white silica sand that feels like sifted flour underfoot.

How to Visit
Take a wooden longtail boat from the southern end of Patong Beach (1,200–1,500 THB return, 15 min ride). Alternatively, hike the steep jungle path from the road on the hill between Patong and Karon (a small access fee is charged; wear sneakers).
Artist's Tip
Arrive before 10:00 AM before boat excursions arrive. Snorkel around the granite rocks on the northern edge for schools of iridescent parrotfish.
Tattoo Match
Fine-line tropical monstera leaves, nautical latitude coordinates, or minimalist island horizon.

Hat Kata • หาดกะตะ

Flanked by lush green headlands with the dramatic offshore islet of Koh Pu sitting on the horizon, Kata strikes the perfect balance between vibrant surf culture and relaxed coastal serenity. The bay transforms completely between seasons: tranquil swimming pool in winter, surf capital in the monsoon.

How to Visit
Ride south from Old Town through Chao Fah West, then over the Kata mountain pass. Easy roadside scooter parking along the beachfront road.
Artist's Tip
Head over to Kata Noi (just 5 mins further south over the ridge) for a quieter stretch, or watch the sunset from the bars on the rocks at the south end of Kata.

How to Visit
Follow Route 4024 straight south through Rawai, then turn right toward Nai Harn Lake. Shaded parking is available under the casuarina trees.

How to Visit
Located on the coastal road connecting Nai Harn to Promthep Cape. Park your scooter on the roadside strip right across from the beach entrance.

How to Visit
Take Route 4025 west through Cherngtalay. Ample parking at the main beach park. Easy wide roads suitable for all rider experience levels.

Mai Khao Beach

Hat Mai Khao • หาดไม้ขาว

Phuket's longest stretch of sand extends 11 straight kilometers along the northern coast within Sirinat National Park. With zero high-rise hotels directly on the beachfront, you can walk for miles without seeing another soul. Sea turtles, including endangered leatherbacks, come ashore to nest here between about November and February.

How to Visit
Ride north along the main highway (Thepkasattri Road) past Thalang toward the airport. Park near the National Park HQ or the airport viewing strip.
Artist's Tip
The famous airplane-landing viewpoint sits at the southern tip right next to Runway 09. Stand on the sand as jets come in low overhead — follow any signs and keep off the runway fence.

How to Visit
Direct 25-minute drive from Phuket Old Town over the winding Patong Hill pass. Mind the steep downhill curves on wet days.
