What black and grey means
Black and grey tattoos use only black ink. The artist dilutes it to different strengths — often called grey wash — to build every tone from solid black to soft highlights where the skin shows through. The style grew out of Chicano tattooing in Southern California, where artists worked with a single black ink and fine needles to create detailed religious images, portraits and lettering. Today it covers everything from photo-like realism to illustrative and ornamental work.
Black and grey vs realism
The two overlap. Many of our realism tattoos are black and grey, but black and grey also includes styles that aren't trying to look like a photo: Chicano clowns and lettering, filigree, smoke and clouds, ornamental frames and dark illustrative pieces. If you're not sure which you want, bring your references and your artist will suggest the best approach.
What we've tattooed
Our wall has an Egyptian full back with Tutankhamun and Anubis, a cathedral and praying angel full sleeve, a warrior maiden with a tiger, Poseidon with a glowing trident, Cupid and Psyche on the ribs, a Julius Caesar sleeve and a Chicano clown girl leg sleeve — plus small pieces like a crescent moon over the sea and a palm tree at sunset.
Why guests choose it
- Contrast that lasts. Strong blacks and open skin highlights keep their shape over the years, especially if you protect the tattoo from the sun once it's healed.
- Easy to grow. Sleeves are often built one piece at a time, joined later with smoke, clouds or filigree.
- Works on every skin tone. Black ink reads clearly on light and dark skin alike.
Planning a sleeve on holiday
A full sleeve or back piece is a project of several sessions. On a short trip you can start with one strong centre piece and add to it on your next visit. Tell your artist if you plan to extend later so the first piece leaves room to grow.
Walk-ins are welcome every day from 10:00 to 20:00, depending on artist availability. For bigger custom pieces and in high season (November–April), booking ahead guarantees your artist and date. Send your idea, placement and reference photos through the booking form or on WhatsApp and we'll reply with a free, no-obligation quote, usually within 24 hours.
Get tattooed in the last 2–3 days of your trip. A fresh tattoo needs about 14 days away from the sea, pools and strong sun, so do your beach days first. Our aftercare guide covers the rest.
