Japanese Tattoo
in Phuket Old Town

Dragons, hannya masks, tigers and crashing waves — bold, flowing Japanese-style work planned around the shape of your body.

What Japanese tattooing is

Japanese tattooing, often called irezumi, grew alongside the woodblock prints of Edo-period Japan. It's known for bold outlines, solid black shading and backgrounds of wind bars, waves or clouds that tie the whole piece together. The design is planned around muscles and movement, so it reads clearly from across a room and flows when you move.

Classic motifs and what they mean

  • Dragon (ryū) — wisdom, strength and protection; a guardian rather than a monster.
  • Hannya mask — a woman's passion and jealousy turned demonic; worn to ward off bad luck.
  • Tiger — courage and protection from illness and evil spirits.
  • Koi — perseverance: the carp that swims up the waterfall and becomes a dragon.
  • Waves — the ups and downs of life, and a natural fit for an island like Phuket.
  • Peony, chrysanthemum and cherry blossom — wealth, long life and the shortness of life.

From our studio

Our wall has a Japanese dragon wrapping the shin, a hannya mask with a coiling dragon on a half sleeve, a roaring tiger over ocean waves, and a Hanuman chest piece — the Thai monkey god told with Japanese-style waves and composition. It's a good example of mixing Thai stories with Japanese structure if you'd like something that belongs to both.

Size and sessions

Japanese work looks best big: half sleeves, full sleeves, back pieces and legs. Those take several sessions. On a short holiday you can choose a standalone piece that is finished in one visit, or start a larger design with its outline and main subject and come back to complete it. Tell your artist your dates and your long-term plan so the first session fits the bigger picture.

Walk-ins are welcome every day from 10:00 to 20:00, depending on artist availability. For bigger custom pieces and in high season (November–April), booking ahead guarantees your artist and date. Send your idea, placement and reference photos through the booking form or on WhatsApp and we'll reply with a free, no-obligation quote, usually within 24 hours.

Get tattooed in the last 2–3 days of your trip. A fresh tattoo needs about 14 days away from the sea, pools and strong sun, so do your beach days first. Our aftercare guide covers the rest.
